The Vinedreser's yeast

Song link

Don't be afraid
Of a little pruning

Just keep your faith
In the One true Vine

Stop! Be still
Know God is for you

Jesus is the one
Who fights your battles

Cast your troubles aside
To the one who cares for you
You will rise again
With the God who died
For you

Put your worries on hold
Seek the truth that will mold
All your future hopes
Bringing out the
Fruit that's in you

Watch for the yeast
The yeast of Herod

He's selling you
Money sex power

Flee from the idols
Of this world

Don't fall for snares
Of an unequal yoke

Cast your troubles aside
To the one who cares for you
You will rise again
With the God who died
For you

Put your worries on hold
Seek the truth that will mold
All your future hopes
Bringing out the
Fruit that's in you

Run from the yeast
The yeast of Pharisees

Their legal leaven
Can trap your soul

Reach out to Jesus
Our risen saviour

He'll hold you
Till the end of time

Cast your troubles aside
To the one who cares for you
You will rise again
With the God who died
For you

Put your worries on hold
Seek the truth that will mold
All your future hopes
Bringing out the
Fruit that's in you

(The God who came looking for me)

Everything I Do

(Song link)

Everything I do,
I give it to you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Everytime I'm still,
I'm trusting in you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

When I am dismayed
Battles surround me
Enemies try
And pull me down

When I am broken
Downtrodden, forgotten
Rejected and left
To be alone

I will lift my
Eyes to you!
Sing of your song
The Only Truth
Put up my hands
In sweet surrender
And wonder
At Your proof!

Everything I do,
I give it to you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Everytime I'm still,
I'm trusting in you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Everything I do,
I give it to you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Everytime I'm still,
I'm trusting in you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

When evil taunts me
Tells me I'm nothing
A mere afterthought for you

When people surround me
With pockets of envy
Filling them up
With fallen fruit

I will lift my
Eyes to you!
Sing of your song
The Only Truth
Put up my hands
In sweet surrender
And wonder
At Your proof!

Everything I do,
I give it to you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Everytime I'm still,
I'm trusting in you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Everything I do,
I give it to you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Everytime I'm still,
I'm trusting in you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Oh the chains are breaking now
These lies can't hold me down
Oh the walls are falling down
I am set free by the Son

I'm a child of God I've found
The only Name I'll call
I will throw it all away
To follow You today

Everything I do,
I give it to you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Everytime I'm still,
I'm trusting in you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Everything I do,
I give it to you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Everytime I'm still,
I'm trusting in you-
Jesus, jesus, jesus!

Lift me up

Song link

Don't you worry
For I will lift you up

Don't you hurry
This breeze will be enough

Don't you give up
Your Faith in me
Is more than
What
You think you've got!

I hear a promise
That's so much greater
Than these pearls

Oh

I hear a whisper
That's so much sweeter
Than the world's!

This life is not about
What I do
But what You've done
For me

Jesus you are
My God, my King!

Just keep running
Towards the rugged cross

Just keep looking
To the One who
Knows your heart

Don't you give up
Your Faith in me
Is more than
What
You think you've got!

I hear a promise
That's so much greater
Than these pearls

Oh

I hear a whisper
That's so much sweeter
Than the world's!

This life is not about
What I do
But what You've done
For me

Jesus you are
My God, my King!

I hear You calling
For me to follow You

Into spaces
Where I can tell the Truth

I won't give up
My Faith in You
Is more than
What I think I've got!

I hear a promise
That's so much greater
Than these pearls

Oh

I hear a whisper
That's so much sweeter
Than the world's!

This life is not about
What I do
But what You've done
For me

Jesus you are
My God, my King!

Don't you worry
For I will lift you up

Faith walkers

"Any faith walkers in here?"

The man of God looked around the room in Abundant Life Faith Ministries, Chapel Hill, NC on Friday April 7 to a room full of people cheering that indeed, that they are walking by faith and not by sight. The head of the church, Pastor Clemens had invited her friend as a guest speaker for her church revival that week, and that Friday he was preaching on Jericho and the faith walk those warriors walked as they marched around those walls seven times. In the end, just like at Jericho, the people of God all got together to shout to God from our bellies, and it happened just as Miss Darlene, a woman of God, had been telling me all week!

What does it mean to walk by faith anyway? Surely every believer walks by faith the day he or she believes in Jesus the Christ!

Maybe so, but for most of us, it doesn't happen that fast- God wants ALL of us, and it takes time to give all of ourselves to Christ. Paul convicts us that to walk by faith, we must not walk by sight (2nd Corinthians 5:7).

In Genesis 22, when Abraham and Isaac were walking up the mountain, carrying wood and fire that would be used to offer Isaac himself as a sacrifice, Abraham walked by faith. The Bible does not mention the tears, the fear, the doubt that Abraham faced. All the Bible says is that when Isaac asks where is the sacrifice, Abraham replied, "God will provide."

Jehovah Jireh. God will provide.

"Put your hand through this bracelet," Tracy, a woman of God said during lunch the other day, as she tied the purple string around my wrist. I had told Tracy that I had given up my PhD to God, as Abraham was tested in giving up Isaac, I was being tested to give up my PhD. And I did. And Tracy cut me off in the middle of my story and said, do you know the name of God in that story? I said I didn't know. She asked me to guess. I said God the savior? The promise keeper? The covenant keeper? She pointed to the bracelet she had given me:

"Jehovah Jireh. God the Provider."

Abraham, being the first recorded faith walker, must have had a million thoughts attack him up until the last minute: Isn't this the child that God gave you at the age of 100? Why would he ask you to kill him? What you are doing is an abomination! You are not on the right track! How can you think you know God's voice if God is asking you to do something so cruel? You are crazy. What will Sarah say? She will kill you! Why would God want you to have a child and then take him away? Why would God want you to kill your own son with your own hands? You are not obeying God. You are not walking by faith. You, you, you....

"People will throw doubts at you from every direction, because no one really understands what God is asking you, specifically you, to do at a single moment," said Dr. West. Tonya's church pastor, Dr. West, recounted the stories in her life where she was called to walk by faith and not by sight, throwing everyone around her into a state of doubt as to whether this woman truly was hearing from God. Pastor West learned though what people around us may say, that we are called to follow the voice of our Good Shepherd (John 10). Even Paul states that he lives not to please humanity, but God (Galatians 1:10). "Just keep following the voice of God. You know the voice of Jesus! He has put it in your blueprint to follow His voice! Read the Bible and see what God reveals to you. He is a restorer."

The doubts must have been deafening. But instead of focusing on himself, Abraham focused on God.

Abraham lifted up his hands, with the knife high up above Issac, still obedient to God's voice.

You see, Abraham was all sold-out for God. Because he knew that God was all sold-out for Isaac, his son.

Then came the Voice that stopped Abraham.

The Voice that had asked for Abraham to give up and kill the very thing that meant the most to him with his own hands stopped Abraham from killing Isaac.

The Great I AM is not a God who demands child sacrifice. The Lord Almighty demanded the faith it took for Abraham to obey His voice. God demands that those who walk with Him walk by faith and not by sight. God wants us to be all sold-out for Him.

Any faith walkers in the room tonight?

How are you walking by faith? What is God asking you to give up? Do you trust Him to provide as Jehovah Jireh?

Do you know to stand still and let God fight your battles for you (Exodus 14:14)?

Do you trust that He who has started a good work in you will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6)?

Do you understand that if God ordains something, no can come to annul it (Isaiah 14:27)?

Any faith walkers in the room tonight?

What is He asking you to leave at the altar? Leave it to God and watch the freedom and peace that come from surrender. He surely will not put you to shame (Psalm 25:3).

How do I know this? Well. On this Good Friday, we must realize that God provided the sacrifice to end death itself. God the Provider, Jehovah Jireh, gave up his only Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross, to absorb our sin and provide us a way out of the wages of sin (John 3:16). How must it have been for God to look at His Son on the cross? At least thousand-fold the sorrow if Abraham was allowed to kill Isaac that's for sure. At least thousand-fold our pain when we are tested in our faith to give up people and things that mean the most to us.

But turn to gaze upon Jesus on the cross. Look at Him who took our pain. Seek God our Father who ends up providing in the most surprising ways when we obey His Voice and give up ourselves to Him in faith. He wants us to be all sold-out to Christ, not because of our own abilities, but because Christ was all sold-out for us! For our transgressions, he was pierced (Isaiah 53). So we can't be sold out for anything other than Jesus Himself, because it will not hold up in times of trial. Jesus is God's covenant promise to humanity, and God's promises are the only promises that will hold up at ALL TIMES.

Don't think you have what it takes? Your inabilities of any kind are also covered on the cross. Turn to Jesus, and he will give you the faith you need to obey God's voice. As the man said to Jesus, "Help me overcome my unbelief!"

Any faith walkers in here?

Not yet?

Pick up your cross and keep walking...you'll find your faith :)

But what if it's true?

Then I would be dancing
With joy!

But what if it's true?

Then I would buy my tickets
Right now

But if it's true?

Then I would sell everything
And pack my essentials

But what if it's true?

Then I shall start saying my goodbyes
By spending time with friends

But what if it's true?

Then I would pick out the sari
That I would wear down the aisle

But what if it's true?

Then I would look upon my trials
With strange triumph

But what if it's true?

Then I would plan out my days
So I can spend time praising God

And if it is true?

Then I shall write down every detail
Lest I forget
How God parted the waters

But once it is true?

Then we shall go
Wherever God send us

But.

If not.

Then God shall still be

my God.

The middle

It was my fifth 18-hour work day in a row, and I stopped to wonder: am I ever going to get to work on the leaf idea that God had given me? Am I ever going to become a professor like God said I would? Am I actually hearing God when making my plans for my future? Am I ever going to graduate? Will I go to Germany? Will I ever meet the husband God has planned for me?

The questions came to a crescendo, amplifying and building on themselves, drawing affirmation from one another to fight against the hope inside me.

Everyone comes to experience this middle at some point in their lives. Where it is not an exact chronological middle, nor an exact sequential middle, but a middle where your doubts overpower any faith that had remained in your mind.

A middle when you just don't know what to believe anymore.

A middle where your questions overwhelm you, and you are left stranded in a sea of uncertainty.

My middle came swiftly, and out of nowhere. What an attack of the mind! It arrested my thoughts and I, a follower of Jesus the Christ, found it very hard to believe in anything that I felt I heard from God.

And then my laptop shuts down. My dad calls.

"Minu have you eaten today?" "No dad, not yet." "Well eat something! How is it going?" "My laptop is dead...it just short circuited or something." " Well you should take it to Best Buy."

Charger connected? Check. Outlet working? Check. Battery charging? Check.

"Sure dad, I'll take it to Best Buy tomorrow."

I took my work to another lab computer and finished it at 6am, sending it off to the parties who would give me feedback on the work, letting them know I was taking off the rest of Monday given the 90 hours I worked the past five days.

After a nap on Monday, I decided that I knew better than my dad, a computer genius, and that I would go to the store I bought the laptop in and ask them for help first. The person helping me told me my laptop was not even in their system! We were both confused, as I had bought the laptop from their store. Since I wasn't in their system, I was asked to pay $50 to ship the computer and then wait two months for it to come back. I declined and walked out.

Tired, I went to the food court as I felt God reminding me to eat some food. As I ate the falafel wrap and sat in a rocking chair, I remembered how God had brought my phone back to life (story can be found here). I pressed my finger into the power button and said, "God I pray that this computer will work in your mighty name!"

Aaaand nothing. More middle thoughts flood my head.

It wasn't that I was obsessed with my laptop and was destroyed that it wasn't working. It was more the exhaustion and the fact that my faith was on thin ice. I felt that my prayers were meaningless, and that I had been hearing God wrong this whole time.

My dad calls. "Minu did you take the laptop to Best Buy?" "No dad not yet. I'll do it now since I'm nearby."

Dejected, I walk into Best Buy and let the front desk guy know I had a laptop in my bag in case he wanted me to put a sticker on it. "No that won't be necessary. Just go over to Geek Squad and they can help you out."

I walked up to the Geek Squad desk and let them know about the laptop short circuiting. "Did you charge it all night? Did you try power cycling? Did you try it for 15 seconds instead of 30?" Yes. Yes. Yes.

"Well then Joseph can help you out."

Joseph takes my laptop and connects it to store charger. He asked me the same questions, and I answer that I've tried all the power cycling and charging techniques I knew about.

He takes his finger, and presses down on the power button for 15 seconds.

It turns on.

"HOW DID YOU DO THAT???!! I TRIED THAT ALL DAY AND NIGHT!! HOW DID YOU..."

Joseph looks me dead in the eyes. "Yeah. But did you believe?"

I look around wildly.

"Excuse me?"

"You did all those things. But did you believe?"

More than ever, I felt the conviction of the Holy Ghost fall upon me. All my doubts came to the surface and I confessed to Joseph as if I were confessing to God, "You know what? I didn't. I didn't believe. I did not believe. I did everything, but did not believe."

"You need to believe," Joseph says, and hands my laptop back to me.

I'm grinning ear to ear. I look around and no one seems to have noticed this exchange.

"Are you a pastor or something?"

"What? No I'm just playing Pokemon go," Joseph says, already walking away.

And so my middle got challenged by the question, "Did I believe?" And so my middle ended with me answering, "Yes Lord, I believe in the dreams you have given me. I believe the ideas you have inspired me with, just as I believe in You."

Later that month for my sister's birthday, we visited a worship service. A lady I had never met before comes up to me to say that God just wants me to believe. On the way back, my car starts and the radio delivers the end of a sermon, "...and sometimes, we just need to sit down and believe in God's promises."

Now many of you may be going, "Face palm! These are just coincidences, Minu!"

I want to say the Pharisees had the same option back when Jesus wasn't found in the tomb. They had the choice to look at the series of events and to either disregard them as coincidences, or to believe.

What defines a believer? The definition starts with a person (of any race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, nationality, social status) believing that Jesus died and on the third day, rose from the dead. What a story to end all stories. What a narrative that ends the end if one were to lend their ear to the truth that Jesus died and rose again. The Easter story gives ALL people all of eternity- IF they choose to believe in Jesus the Christ.

I believe the Easter story. And this laptop story? Well, it confronted me when I was in my middle. It didn't matter that I busted my butt working long hours (while enjoying God's presence near me while doing experiments but still) in the lab and doing all that I could with my own strength. Nothing I tried with the laptop mattered. It was an object lesson in showing me that no matter what I do, my actions will be meaningless if I don't have faith.

When I was afloat and without hope, the laptop story renewed my faith. I don't know who Joseph was, nor the woman at the church, but I do know that God was speaking to me through them. I pray that anyone else out there experiencing such a middle is able to feel the full weight of this one question:

Did you believe?

And in Jesus name, may the power turn back on in your lives as you answer His call, and you choose to believe.

Mark 9:23English Standard Version (ESV)

23 And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”
