Orange

Turning twenty-seven
With a smile on my face
Looking ahead with
Bold ambition
At the adventure
God has given me
This life
Full of His presence
Full of brilliant sunsets
Casting an orange
So deep that
I can feel it
I can see it
With my eyes closed
For I know that it
Is He who
Is speaking
Through the clouds
Warming my cold face
With gentle whispers
And when the clouds
Come rushing in to
Block out His love
I cry out- fasting and praying
Until I feel the orange
So deep
Through the dissonance
And my soul is well again
It is well again
When I think back to the time
I never imagined
The time I turned twenty-seven
With a smile on my face

Broken

Being broken is something we often consider a nuisance, or an obstacle. Why is this computer broken? Why is the immigration system broken? Why did my nail break? (Ok the last one was more of a gripe than an obstacle). Though those items serve us better when fixed, we often race to fix whatever is broken and end up missing the process of reparation itself as a gift and a revelation. Before I share three stories of how Jesus spoke to me about brokenness through a phone, a djembe and my own broken person, I wanted to observe the Google definition of broken, which is a survey of its most widely accepted meanings:

Phew. Pretty dismal. I mean all of it is true- being broken does cause a lot of pain when there are broken relationships, broken items, and a broken person hood. But when the world throws away brokenness, why does the gospel seem to treat the matter of brokenness differently, saying that God demands it (1)? Why does Jesus seem to choose to hang out with broken people over those who are perfect, such as those from the Sanhedrin (2)? Why do countless scriptures look at the brokenness in this world with hope, rather than despair (3)?

Object lesson # 1: Broken phone
I am not very careful with my phone. Ask anyone who has seen me with it from college to graduate school. I leave it everywhere, it falls everywhere, and really, I spend most of my life without it. Once however, I really messed up. I was kayaking in Chicago with a nice guide, and in my zeal to take photos of the majestic Chicago skyline from the humble river, I lost sight of how much water was gathering in my ziplock bag.

After the trip, I found the phone completely dead and got the help of the guide to get back home safely. I felt saddened by the loss of all the photographs I wanted to share with my dad, who loved to tell my family about the Chicago skyline when he was younger and worked there.

I put the phone in a sack of rice. I put it out in the sun. I wiped clean each part and used a hair dryer to get any last droplets of the river out. No dice. I caved and went into the local cell phone repair shop with a friend and we were greeted by a pretty hopeless answer. "Look, lady, I don't think I can help your phone. It looks pretty bad. I have to charge you for my time no matter what. Sound good?" warned the boy. I agreed, and came back in thirty minutes. "Uh...so the phone was dropped in brackish water or something? It's super rusted everywhere, and I don't think there is any hope for you. This phone's broken pretty bad so you should probably buy a new one. And I feel real bad about your photos so how about I charge you ten instead of fifteen dollars?" I paid up, thanking him for his sympathy.

I went home to find two dear friends of mine praying for their church, and wondered, what if I prayed for the phone? I threw up my hands in the air and prayed, "Jesus, please heal my broken phone, so I can speak to friends again!" My friends turned their heads toward my phone. I turned it on. It beeped, and the Google nexus logo appeared in its full glory, lighting up the screen.

What.

I texted my friend who had been with me in the repair shop. She texted back asking whether it was because I had prayed really hard, at the same time as I had replied that I had prayed, just once, to Jesus.

The adventures of Lazarus
So the phone received the name lazarus (4). God not only showed me and my friend that He reigns over electronics, He also used the broken phone to show me how much yearns for us to hear Him.

The weeks following the phone's recovery, I was unable to make any outgoing calls. When I finally did, I could hear the person I called but the person could not hear me! It was quite frustrating. One night, my sister called me. She had gone through a lot in her day, and was telling me all about it. At the pauses in her speech, I tried to communicate to her that we should pray together, or that she should not worry, or that everything will be fine. I tried to tell her as she was saying goodbye that I love her, but she could not hear me.

"Ok Minoi I hang up now...I can't hear you but...I know you can hear me. I want to say I love you and will talk to you soon. [Pause, in which I'm telling her loudly that I love her too] Ok, well I can't hear anything so I'm going to go sleep now. Goodnight"

"Man. What's the point of fixing my phone if people can't hear me, God?' I asked.

He answered. He told me that is how He feels when we pray to Him, and think there is no one replying. In fact, He is always speaking to us, but we cannot hear due to spiritual dissonance. He has so much to tell us and wants us to discern His voice, but we have to pray against the spiritual dissonance before this can happen. (5)

After I felt these words and thoughts, my phone started working. I could make calls and use the speakerphone for people to hear me, and for us to communicate.

Object lesson # 2: Broken djembe
My friends Jessica, Kristin and I found the djembe in the church closet with all the other instruments in storage. I felt a great affinity towards it, and asked for help to get it. It was too high up for the three of us. I climbed up the shelf and got it down. It had a gash down the middle of its skin, and was extremely dusty. I wiped off the dust, and told my friends that I will probably fix it so I can play it at the free market.

As soon as I said it, I felt the words:

"No. Broken instruments can make music just as broken people can pray to God."

I decided to follow the order I heard in the church, and did not fix the drum. I instead got into reading about multicultural worship, and brought it with me to random gatherings, where I would play the broken Djembe, telling people what I had heard in the church.

Object lesson # 3:  Broken person
First of all, BIG disclaimer: I am NOT an object, because women are not objects, as no person is an object. I am merely referring to my pride, ego and self-will being broken. I found out this week what it mean to become broken in this regard. There were surmounting conflicts at the workplace. The levee broke this week, I was sick with some viral cold, I was hurt, and ended up yelling at a person. Several people empathized and even lauded my courage. I however, was in turmoil, and unable to speak peace into my soul. Did Jesus not tell me to love my neighbour? How was yelling at someone loving them? I had to shut out the voices that were defending me in my self-righteousness, My fight was not against this person, this flesh and blood, but against the powers and principalities behind the person. What had I done? I had broken a relationship and acted out of anger, not of love! It didn't matter what was right and wrong, it mattered only that I forgave and loved the person. I cried in disbelief. My ego and pride as being on the right track was shattered. I lost a lot of my will, and asked God whether there will be a chance for me to right my wrongs.

I cried out to God at 7am in the morning, singing the Kristin Stanfill song, "Always." My roommate probably concluded that I was insane at this point. Yet, inside me, something was changing. The turmoil became joy, as I realized God was going to give me a chance for my favourite hobby ever: reconciliation! I became bold and even felt the heavy headache and fever leave me. I approached my bike and thought of the armor of God as I put on my helmet that will save me, checked my bike lights of faith, adjusted my shawl of the spirit, put on my coat of righteousness, looped the belt of truth, and put on my boots of peace. I realized riding to work that I was broken on the inside from my wrongdoing, and broken on the outside from the headache and sickness, but I had Jesus working through me. It was a miraculous turnaround at work. Peace reigned and apologies were made- on both sides! I felt like a new woman.

Snot-nosed and triumphant, I biked home to a new realization. That God was breaking me, so more of Him can shine through me. He reminded me this week that unless a kernel of wheat falls and breaks, it cannot bear fruit (6). Indeed, I had fallen on the cornerstone and will continue to be broken. But unlike what Google declares, I will not despair of this brokenness! It is a brokenness that will shine His light through the cracks of my broken self.

I know that peace in this world will be discontinuous, and that I will keep encountering turmoil and unrest around me, especially at work. However, I now know not to reply based on my ego, reply based on my pride and rely on my own will. I need to instead pray before I think up clever replies and speak only what Jesus wills me to speak- the language of truth in love.

Worth the cost?
Let us not lose the beauty of life by forsaking that which is broken, and those that are broken. It is in the brokenness that we find God's love for us - speaking to us through the spiritual dissonance, hearing us praise him with our broken djembes, and using us through our gifts and our imperfections.

So it is worth it for you? To be broken on the cornerstone?

Bible verses

1: "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise." (Psalm 51:17 KJV)

2: "When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?" (Mark 2:16, NIV)

3: "As they were eating, Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to the disciples, saying, "Take this and eat it, for this is my body." (Matthew 26:26, NLT)

4: "38Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. 39Jesus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh: for he hath been dead four days. 40Jesus saith unto her, Said I not unto thee, that, if thou wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God? 41Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus lifted up his eyes, and said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. 42And I knew that thou hearest me always: but because of the people which stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me. 43And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. 44And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go." (John 11: 38-44, KJV)

5: 12Then he said, “Don’t be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day you began to pray for understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your request has been heard in heaven. I have come in answer to your prayer. 13But for twenty-one days the spirit princec of the kingdom of Persia blocked my way. Then Michael, one of the archangels,d came to help me, and I left him there with the spirit prince of the kingdom of Persia.e 14Now I am here to explain what will happen to your people in the future, for this vision concerns a time yet to come.” (Daniel 10: 11-13, NLT)

6: "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit." (John 12:24, ESV)

Ever faster

Hey God.

Thanks for giving us hope
To make us softer

For a life
That lets us falter

For love
To go running after

For a chase
That's worth the laughter

For fights
To forgive one another

For a choice
To make you master

Of our lives
That are saved
From disaster

In knowing that
You
One day
Will come back
Ever faster.

Faded

She stares out from within
The four framed corners
Holding the grey oil paints
That show her sitting in a chair

Waiting with her hands
Under her chin
Helping keep her head up

Then comes a brush stroke
That drops a bright
Teal and yellow lilly
On her lap
What colours!
What boldness!
Where is this flower from?

This sudden blessing
That shows the girl
That all she knew is
Faded in comparison
To the bold love
That awaits
Beyond the grey oil
On the framed canvas
Marked by mortality

She stares at the lilly
So beautiful and obvious
A stark contrast to the
Dull world around her

She looks around
Clutches the flower
Defying the strokes that
Bound her to the chair
She peels herself away

And jumps out of the canvas
Into the very world
The lilly is from

"Bad" Christian

A person close to my heart once remarked that I was, "a bad christian." His words plunged me into a month of guilt and doubt. Why did he say that? Is that even a valid statement? I repented to God for any mistake I made, and rebuked the feelings of condemnation and started wondering, what is a bad christian? Can there be such a description without contradicting the very nature of christianity?

After almost a month of prayer for God to forgive me for being a "bad" christian in my friend's eyes, this comment kept bothering my heart. I decided to write about it at Weaver street market. As I sat writing, a passer by came up to me and asked what I was writing about. I told him that I was writing a concept piece about what being a christian really means. He responds with, "I knew you were a believer! I can tell that you are a good christian." Wow. His words immediately freed me from the burden I had been carrying in my heart, which I let him know! Before we prayed together for his schooling, I asked him what he meant by the term "good christian." We engaged in a conversation which I now feel lead to jot down.

God had sent one of his children to help free my heart from unnecessary guilt, but also allowed me to contemplate the situation. I wanted to write it up in case it will help unburden others who may carry such guilt in their hearts even after repentance, as we are ultimately free from shame in Jesus name.

1. Grace vs the law- Can we even live as perfect beings?
Being a Christian is built on God's unending Grace, not human perfection (Mark10:27 and John 1:16-17). No matter how much we try, we cannot achieve earthly perfection, as we are all imperfect beings in this world. However, we often hold onto the ideal of perfection as dictated by society instead of focusing on the transformation of our spirit that happens when we fellowship with Jesus. In this state, we get worried when we fall short, or judgmental when others don't measure up to our expectations of perfection. When we become Christians, we live under Grace, and not the law that expects perfection (Galatians 3:13). Jesus reminds us to let go of our judgement of each other with very simple imagery that describes the speck of dust that we notice in our friend's eye while having a whole plank sticking out of our own! (Luke 6:41-42) So if we are asked to focus on the plank in our own eye instead of the speck of dust in our friend's eye, where do we begin? The answer is in the next two lines of Luke 6.

2. Bearing good fruit- There is no perfect fruit
In Luke 6: 43-44, Jesus describes the nature of the tree will be shown in the nature of its fruit. If we were to focus on what God's calling is on our lives, we will realize that there is no such thing as perfect fruit, or a perfect tree, or a perfect Christian, as "each tree is recognized by its own fruit." If we focused instead on legalism, it can hamper the growth of others and even worse, hamper our own growth! If we were to recognize that we are not bearing good fruit, then it is never too late to pray that God will guide you towards producing fruit, or, actions in this life that He has called you to. This requires us to accept that we are imperfect beings in need of God's help. How much? Pretty much...always.

3. Losing the kernel- Accepting our imperfection
Being a Christian hinges upon losing our ego to follow Jesus. In a stunning yet simple image of a kernel of wheat falling and losing its life, Jesus talks about how a seed can never grow unless it dies first (John 12:24). Kernels of wheat contain several layers that need to degrade before the actual embryo can grow into a wheat plant (refer to image). This was said before we had microscopes to look at cells. This was said even before we understood cells and their role in division for growth and senescence for death of organisms. Amazing. Here, Jesus tells us quite simply that He wants all our layers that we have put on as beings in a troubled world. He wants us to lose all these layers. These layers include any ideas that we are perfect beings, that we can ever be perfect beings, and our inability to show our soft side to each other or to God. He wants all the hard layers off! No ego! Show Him your heart! He demands this from us in order for us to have life in Him, and in order for us to grow and bear the good fruit he has planned for us. Society dictates that part of attaining perfection is to pretend to be strong in the face of trials. Jesus demands the opposite. In losing our ego, our lives as dictated by the world around us, we gain our life in the Spirit, in Him. It is so refreshing to let go of the idea of being "good" or "bad" as described by our fellow humans and follow instead a path of validation that results only from God. It is a path that determines our value based on how much we bear the cross and die to ourselves.

4. State function vs path function- Accepting the transformation from Jesus
In thermodynamics, a state function is a mathematical description of a process whose "value does not depend on the path taken to reach that specific value." Life is quite the opposite for us humans. Our values, and our value to God, are both realized through the path we take in life. How many of us have felt His love lift us up during moments of darkness and despair? How much have we felt loved and thus realized our value to Jesus? Being a Christian does not mean we lose sight of our struggles in our race towards our inheritance- eternal life. It involves taking stocking of both the good and bad parts of our life and ourselves as we run towards Him. It means that being a good christian and a bad christian will happen as often as life happens, and it is part of the journey. I am often reminded of the gracious way in which Jesus has lifted me out of my various very stupid mistakes and helped me grow. If I had not been for such scenarios, I would have never experienced feeling His grace freeing me from the burdens of this world and its demands of perfection. I would never have had the chance to keep transforming and focus on His word in the hopes of bearing good fruit. In losing my kernel, I was able to view life as a path function rather than a state function. In our path function of a life, we can only keep turning back to God no matter how many times we stumble or lose our way.

5. God determines good from bad- Give it up to God!
During our very stochastic life processes, we are unable to sense the bigger picture until we really take time to pray and ask God for discernment. When we do this, we allow for Him to guide us in our spiritual walk. If we were to allow for any voice other than the bible and voice of Jesus reign over us, we will be lead astray. Also, Jesus explains to his disciples in his Parable of the Tares that it is up to God to determine the good from the bad, the wheat from the weeds (Matthew 13).

Just something to think about the next time someone qualifies the term Christian with a "good" or "bad"! Thanks for any comments or feedback!

Verses and references used in this post:

1. Grace vs the law
-Mark 10:27, NIV: Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."
-John 1:16-17, NIV: Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
-Galatians 3:13, NIV: Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.
-Luke 6:41-42, NIV: Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,' when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

2. Bearing good fruit
-Luke 6: 43-44, NIV: No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.
Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers

3. Losing our kernel
-John 12:24, NIV: Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.

The Architect story

Marsico hall

The opening ceremony for the new building had just ended, and I wanted to explore its 6th floor for the fantastic view overlooking the campus. I quickly set up a gel (an acrylamide polymer that takes ~ an hour to trap large proteins for visualization) and walked across the street. As I went to the 6th floor, I ran into a former student of mine who was working in a lab at Marsico! I was happy to see her, and told her about my recent decision to follow Jesus. Being a believer herself, she was amazed that I had come to know God, which we joked about, since she told me that who I was back in the day had her convinced that I would be quite far from a decision such as this. I noticed though that she was in distress about her future and her direction in life. I offered to pray for her to grow closer to Jesus and seek His face and give up her worries to Him.

We left the 6th floor and wandered around for a while, looking for a place to pray in a building made of 85% glass and 0% privacy. There was finally an empty lobby surrounded by walls rather than a huge glass window that we decided would be our prayer spot. I geared up to pray. I placed my hand on her shoulder and- "boom! boom! boom!"

We both jumped and turned to see some strange guy knocking on the side door. We look away, trying to ignore his knock. There is a front entrance for those have card access. Why is he knocking on this side door that is quite far from the entrance? I again place my hand on her shoulder and start to say- "boom! boom! boom!"

Okay. Now we were a little worried. Who is this guy? Is he trying to break in or something? It's a brand new building, and those with access can get in, so who is he? We turn away, a little afraid.

Again he thumps on the glass door. This time, since there were some others near us, I went up and opened the door in annoyance.

His face was a mixture of joy and relief. "I am the chief architect of this building, and they locked me out!!!" he bursts out. I stand there, stunned into silence. Slowly a mad grin breaks out across my face. "You're the main architect of this building?" I ask. "Yes!" he replies. "I made the blueprint of this building. From scratch! I know every corner and every door. And they locked me out!" he says once again. "Wow! You built this building? It's beautiful!" I say.

I look at my friend and she is shaking her head in disbelief, also grinning. We both wait for the architect to leave and realize that God was trying to tell us something. That humanity had locked out its chief architect, and will not realize it until we let Him in. When we do, we end up thanking him for making us the way He made us! We prayed that we let more of God into our hearts and lives. We prayed that we will let His will reign over our life as he knocks on our door and opens up doors for the future.

Revelation 3:20

I was so moved by the architect story that I kept thinking about it whenever I prayed. I asked God what it meant, and whether I was over interpreting a simple life event. Should I look past such events, or are these stories meant to be a message? I flipped open the Bible and prayed for the Holy Spirit to guide my reading. The wind from my fan flipped the pages to Revelation. I thumbed through the verses, wondering what all the symbols in the verses meant. Suddenly, my eyes stopped at Revelation 3:20 "Behold, I stand at the door and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and sup with him, and he with me." I was stunned. My heart was on fire. I was burning up. And the architect story fell into place with the verse in my head and heart!

Here, Jesus, the ultimate architect, it talking about standing there at the door of our hearts, our homes, our churches, knocking. Now, when someone knocks on a door, the person is usually asking for permission to come in. To enter. This is the the God of the Universe, who created us and our hearts, asking for permission to enter our hearts. What better case for free will is there in the Bible than this verse alone! God shows us that He will never impose himself upon us, but instead will knock until we MAKE the choice to

1) hear His voice (discernment),
2) open the door (action),
3) let him in (trust) and,
4) sup, or, eat with Him (fellowship with Jesus).

How amazing! Such defined actions are being asked of us as individuals, as families, as churches, as institutions and businesses. How busy are we to even take notice of that knock on our various doors? Doors are a result of a broken world that has resulted from the fall. We put them up to protect us from harsh weather, animals and people. When we experience enough troubles of this world, sometimes our doors become permanently shut, a situation where we can let no one in, especially God. As in the architect story, we ignore, we fear, we get annoyed when the architect of the universe knocks on the barriers we have put up. We fear that our comfort zone will be taken away. We get annoyed that the life and buildings we have built for ourselves will be knocked down. We end up ignoring the knock, the calling, the voice of Jesus because we just don't know how to hear Him, open our heart, let Jesus in, and spend time with Him.

When I opened the door for the architect, his face was that of joy. How joyous must our Father in heaven be when we let in God and let our fears collapse!

Thank you Jesus for opening up doors and breaking down our walls. Thank you God for healing us through your unending patience as you stand there knocking. May we be more discerning of your voice when you call out to us.

Not an introvert, not an extrovert, but a God-vert

Everyday, before the sun
Breaks through the sky
I pick up my jar
So dusty, so dry
Carry it outside
To the three wells
One full of people
The second so desolate
The third quite far
Too far for me to care.
I make my choice
And set out to the people
Wanting to draw energy
From those around me
Their words seem distant
Their gazes go right through me
And I said maybe my energy
Should come from within
I head to the desolation
Seeking solace from solitude
And realized I had nothing
But the glimmer from that
Well far away
And make my choice
Today before the sun sets,
I pick up my jar
So dusty, so dry
And carry it to the well
Where I dip my jar
And feel my soul leave
The dust on the ground
And suddenly my parched throat
Is wet with songs that praise the
God who gives me energy
I draw my strength
From the well
Of Living water
And wait for Him to direct my path
Between the three wells
He directs my path to each of them
But my energy comes from Him alone.

Abner's cry

Must the sword devour forever?
Must we seek peace
Only by drawing blood?
Must the enemy roam around
Unrebuked and cause discord
And disharmony
When the sweet melodies of
God's children sing the
Praises of Jesus?
It is time we woke up
And answered this timeless
Question from Abner.
It is time we realized
That no one wins a war,
Any battle, that rages
For man's desires
And ignores the peace of God
That is possible through prayer alone!
Yes, there is no trivial fight
In the kingdom of God-
For the smallest of battles
In our eyes that seem insignificant
Have a spiritual side that
We are not aware of:
In every trivial fight we face
Strongholds that catch us unaware
Unless we carry it to Jesus
And not to the sword of man.
Let His Love
And His Grace carry us through
As we pray for His help
In every battle.
For He knows that the
Battles we face are not easy.
They may seem impossible,
But He knows that
There is no trivial victory
In the kingdom of God
So let Him into
Your heart, your battles, your life
And you will be amazed
That the sword of this
World loses its power-
That the sword of His spirit
Takes over!
That the swords of men that killed Abner
Do not have to devour forever!
That the sword of His spirit
Through a small prayer
Can slice through your battles
No matter how big
Or how small. Because:
Just as Jesus knows
There is no trivial fight
In the kingdom of God,
He knows there is also
No trivial person
In the kingdom of God.
For He wishes to reach all
Through His ultimate victory against darkness.
May Jesus silence the sword of man
As we pray for the sword of the spirit
As our only weapon in this world.
Amen.

2 Samuel 2:26New International Version (NIV)

Abner called out to Joab, “Must the sword devour forever? Don’t you realize that this will end in bitterness? How long before you order your men to stop pursuing their fellow Israelites?”

Who

Lord you send people my way
Much of whom I don't respect
Many of whom I don't recall
Who then shall I turn to
When I fall
I ask you, Jesus,
Who then shall I turn from?
For the fall is coming
And my mind is stayed
On summer's long days
That are filled with
Glorious sunshine
And endless warmth
Lord you send people away
Much of whom I can't be with
Many of whom I can't forget
Who then shall I turn to
Oh Lord, Jesus
Who then shall I turn from?
Give me discernment, oh Lord
Give me peace.

Confidence

If your confidence
Is in humanity,
If your confidence
Is in money,
If your confidence
Is in yourself,
Then my friend,
It is misplaced!
Quick! Look for it!
Where is it hiding?
Is it under your pillow?
Is it under your nose?
Behold! Who is that knocking? 1
Knocking on the door of your heart?
Is it your confidence knocking?
What a mystery! What a knock!
It is ever-persistent, an
Ever-lasting pursuit,

That knock!
For it is God Himself
Knocking at the door
Of your heart-
Can you hear Him?
Can you hear His voice?
Will you, after hearing His voice,
Let Him in?
Or will you, having not confidence,
In Him, keep the door closed?
Closed to the very
Confidant who wishes
To be close to you?
Closed to the very being who
Wants you to confide in Him?
For a confidant is the very
Person you confide in, and
With every occasion of confiding,
Build more confidence to have
A place where your trust rests in peace!
So will you rest your peace
On the one with whom
Every conversation
Is a confident prayer?
With whom the door of
Your heart is an open one
The same way you would leave the door
Of your house open in a safe place-
Where you keep your heart open
Because of your confidence
In the safety of His refuge 2
How much more you
Will sing His praises
As your heart lets God in! 3
How much more you will
Walk with authority, given
Even the most uncertain path
Ahead of you that only faith-
The confidence of in what you hope for 4
And assurance about what
You do not see-
Can get you through?
For when your faith-
Your confidence-
Is in God, he shall 5
Be your confidence
And keep your feet
From being taken away
From the path of His will
Helping you walk the path
In front of you,
Step by faithful step-
Having all trust in God
To protect you, and
Keep you safely
As you call on Him 6
He will answer
Just as he has faith
That you will answer
As the God of the universe
The creator of your being,
Your body, your heart
Knocks humbly at its door
To ask permission
To be let in through your own will
Given freely to you
And to converse
And to commune
And to connect
With His creation-
You! Made for the purpose
Of choosing to be with
Your maker
Your confider
Your confidant
Your confidence- Jesus.

In God we trust

How small is our God
that we rely on guns for protection?
How small is our God
that we hide in tanks for refuge?
How small is our God
that we attack with drones for defense?
IF we have faith in Jesus
King of ALL kings 1
the Prince of Peace 2
who has counselled 2 us
To walk with our
feet shod in the gospel of PEACE, 4
Should we not have Him
As our protector, our defense, our refuge? 5
How small have we made Jesus?
I am a believer because I believe
His story did not end with the
Bruising and battering of His body
With man-made weapons 3
I believe that he was
Victorious over these
Weapons fashioned against Him
For none of these could stand against
The might of our God, Jesus Christ!
I believe he rose again,
Defeating the violent end
That man thought he had
Met on the cross
Defying the narrative of life and
Death that has plagued every mortal until
That day he rose again- when he made
Peace possible, when he made peace
A pragmatic possibility for mankind to follow
And yet
We stand
Not in his gospel of peace 4
But against flesh and blood, 6
Our brothers and sisters,
With weapons formed against them 3
With weapons that intend to
End their lives over
Oil and money and past hurts and
Power and religion- when- our
Own life is but a breath. 7
Beloved followers of Jesus Christ:
Why do we not take heed of
The once-violent Paul when he says
Our fight is against spiritual darkness and not our fellow man? 6
Why do we deny Jesus when he teaches us to 8
Forgive our fellow humans
Not seven times
But seventy times seven? 9
Why do we ask if we are our brother's keeper 10
When God asks us to love
Our neighbours 11, our friends 12, our enemies? 13
Why have we lost our faith,
our way on the path of peace
that Jesus preached?
Be brave oh Jesus followers
As the accuser tempts you into
Violence- for that is not
The solution Jesus wishes for us to seek 14
Protect yourself instead with the armor of God 15
As you go into battle
Have faith in the Lord who reigns and
Not in the fear that may 16
Burn like fire but is just
Smoke and mirrors.
As the Truth of Jesus will protect you
As you pray for God to strengthen you 17
Lift up all your persecutions to Jesus,
Whose yoke is not an AK-47
Whose yoke is not a shotgun
Whose yoke is not a literal sword 18
But the sword of the Holy Spirit. 19
Listen not to the lies that
Dictates unforgiveness will rule
Over your life
Listen not to the deceptions that
Points to murder as the only answer
For God is the only answer
For Jesus has given us the free will 20
To choose His way
The path of peace.
For your mind will be at peace
As you put down your weapons
And take up the helmet of salvation 15
For your heart will grow
During any attack
As you take up your shield of faith 15
For your eyes will smile
In the face of persecution
As you stand
Steady in the Gospel of Peace
Do not smirk as
I say give peace a chance
For it is the same
As giving Jesus a chance
One chance
To have your faith in Him
Through prayer and supplication 21
For it is not in guns we trust,
but in God. 22
